One of the largest motorcycle groups in the state, the Texas Gold Wing Road Riders Rally, has announced it is coming to Amarillo in 2009.

Tentative dates for its 2009 meeting are May 14-17. Estimated peak attendance for the rally is 800. Amarillo has hosted other motorcycle groups in the past but this is the first time the Gold Wing association has come to town. Meetings, exhibits and events will be focused around the Amarillo Civic Center. Several rides will take Gold Wing members all around the Panhandle.

“The city of Amarillo couldn’t be happier that this major recreational motorcycle group has selected our city for its major state rally. Amarillo and the Panhandle are a great climate for cruising on a motorcycle. From our wide roads, big skies and great weather to beautiful places like Palo Duro Canyon State Park, this area was made for motorcycles,” Jerry Holt, VP of the Amarillo CVC says.

With an estimate of 1,200 room nights for local hotels and motels, this rally may bring in nearly $375,000 to Amarillo businesses.

“We are really looking forward to "Riding Into The Real Texas",” Ken Peterson, Co-Director of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association, Texas District, said.

Amarillo has been on our radar for years, based on places to see, things to do and a motorcycle-friendly community, Peterson explains. It will be great to go from our special event this year on the deck of the USS Lexington to an unforgettable experience next year in Palo Duro Canyon State Park.
