Amarillo Named a Top 10 True Western Town for Second Consecutive Year

Thanks to the editors of True West magazine, everyone in Amarillo can stand a little straighter and sit a little taller in the saddle. For the second consecutive year, Amarillo is a Top 10 True Western Town, coming in #6 on the list for 2016. Amarillo was #4 on the list for 2015.

"Amarillo is dedicated to promoting and maintaining our Western history and heritage," Bob Boze Bell, True West Executive Editor, explains. "Not only in terms of history but the scope of the museums, historic sites and annual heritage events. We're pleased to recognize Amarillo as a Top True Western Town."

"We are very proud of this recognition. Amarillo is a name that still resonates of the real Texas, from cowboys to cattle to wide open spaces. True West editors realize that the city continues to honor that history," Dan Quandt, VP of the Amarillo Convention & Visitors Bureau, says.

True West editors cited many Western attractions and events in and around Amarillo, such as Palo Duro Canyon, the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame and Museum, the Kwahadi Museum of the American Indian, the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum, the Cowboy Mountain Shooting Association Tony Lama World Finals, the Amarillo Farm & Ranch Show and the WRCA World Championship Ranch Rodeo.

But Amarillo has much more to offer fans of Western history and experiences including-
-horse rides at Cowgirls and Cowboys in the West.
-dinner at the Big Texan Steak Ranch.
-performances at the outdoor musical drama TEXAS.
-tours at the Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument.
-art at the Kenneth Wyatt Art Galleries.
-ranchers and cowboys at the Amarillo Livestock Auction.
-history of Old Tascosa at the Cal Farley's Boys Ranch.
-longhorns at the Coors Cowboy Club Cattle Drive & Ranch Rodeo.
-beautiful horses at the AQHA Adequan Select World Championship Show.
-competition at the National Junior Bull Riding Association Championship.
-and celebration at the National Day of the Cowboy.

And there are numerous rodeos, concerts and smaller events (reinings, cuttings, horse shows and livestock shows) that are woven into Amarillo's current Western fabric as well. Even the city's location on historic Route 66 feeds visitors' dreams of the automobile and the American West.

"We think it's all about giving over 2 million overnight visitors what they want, which most frequently is a true Western experience. Amarillo can do that any time of the year," Quandt says.

The complete Top 10 list for 2016, which will be released in True West on newsstands in January, is-

1. Lubbock, TX
2. Dodge City, KS
3. Buffalo, WY
4. Prescott, AZ
